Basements, garages and garden rooms are popular places for a home gym, but they are often poor places for a signal. Streaming classes, connected equipment and simply making a phone call all depend on good coverage. Ofcom, the UK communications regulator, publishes consumer advice on Wi-Fi and mobile signal and sets the rules on signal boosters. This article summarises that advice and applies it to a home gym. Why these spaces struggle<\/h2>\n

Ofcom says the location and characteristics of a property affect mobile signal indoors: thick walls, metal window frames, ceilings, pillars and basement rooms can all impair coverage, and so can being in the shadow of a hill or large building. It also says newer glazing and insulation materials can affect indoor signal. On Wi-Fi, Ofcom explains that signals weaken as they pass through objects, that brick internal walls make coverage harder than hollow ones, and that water, metal and glass block the signal.<\/p>\n
