It is also the part people come back to, usually after something starts hurting.

The good news is that a genuinely complete setup costs less than a single dumbbell and fits under a sofa.

> A note before the kit list. This article covers general mobility and yoga practice for people without a current injury. If you have pain that persists, pain that wakes you at night, numbness or pins and needles, or a diagnosed joint or spinal condition, see a GP or a chartered physiotherapist before starting a new routine. Mobility work is not a substitute for assessment, and “stretching through it” is how minor problems become long ones.

What you actually need

A mat

The only genuinely non-negotiable item.

What you are buying is thickness and grip. Thickness determines whether kneeling and lying positions are comfortable — a thin travel mat is miserable for anything on the knees. Grip determines whether your hands slide in a downward dog once you start to sweat.

For general mobility and strength-adjacent work, thicker is better. For balance-heavy yoga, thinner is better, because a soft mat makes standing balances harder than they need to be. If you want one mat for both, go middling and accept the compromise.

Browse yoga equipment

Two blocks

The most useful and most skipped item on the list.

Blocks are not a beginner’s crutch. They bring the floor closer, which lets you get into a position with a spine you can actually control rather than a position you are hanging in. For anyone with tight hamstrings — which is most people who lift, and most people who sit at a desk — blocks are the difference between a useful stretch and a lower back complaining.

Buy two. Almost every use case is symmetrical.

A strap

Cheap, and it does one thing well: it extends your reach so you can hold a position without collapsing everything else to get there.

A dressing gown cord works. A proper strap with a buckle works better and stays put.

A foam roller

Useful, but understand what it does. The reliable, evidenced effect is a short-term increase in range of motion — which makes it a good warm-up tool. The claims about breaking down scar tissue or releasing fascia are considerably stronger than the evidence.

Use it before training to move better. Do not use it as a treatment for something that hurts consistently.

Browse foam rollers

A light resistance band

Not a stretching tool — a strengthening one. A lot of what people call “tightness” is a joint that lacks strength at the end of its range, and a light band lets you train that end range rather than just pulling on it.

Particularly useful for shoulders, which is where most people who press overhead eventually have a conversation with themselves.

Browse resistance bands

What that costs

A mat, two blocks, a strap, a roller and a band comes to somewhere around £60–100 across our range, depending on choices. Checked August 2026. It is the cheapest complete setup in home fitness by a wide margin, and the only one that fits in a cupboard.

Space

Floor area: your height plus about half a metre in each direction. For most adults that is roughly 2m × 1.2m — a mat’s worth, plus room to extend your arms.

Ceiling: enough to stand with your arms overhead, so about 2.2m for most people. Lower ceilings work for everything except standing overhead reaches.

Wall: genuinely useful. A clear stretch of wall gives you a reference for spinal positions, support for legs-up-the-wall, and a target for shoulder work. Worth planning for.

This is the one type of home training that fits in a bedroom, a lounge corner or a landing without the space becoming a gym.

Fitting it into a room that does something else

The reason mobility work gets skipped is usually friction: the mat is in a cupboard, the cupboard is in another room, and by the time you have fetched it the moment has gone.

The fix is embarrassingly simple. Leave the mat out, or somewhere you pass. A rolled mat behind a door or beside the sofa gets used several times a week. The same mat in a loft gets used twice a year.

A realistic weekly structure

You do not need an hour. Most of the benefit comes from frequency rather than duration.

Before training: 5–10 minutes. Roller, then a few dynamic movements through the ranges you are about to load.

After sitting all day: 5 minutes. Hips and thoracic spine.

Once a week: 20–30 minutes of something longer and slower, whether that is a yoga session or just working through positions with blocks and a strap.

Three short sessions beat one long one, and the short ones are the ones that survive a busy week.

Two things worth knowing

Stretching does not prevent injury in the way it is often described, and static stretching immediately before heavy lifting can slightly reduce force output. Save the long holds for after training or for separate sessions; use movement rather than holds as a warm-up.

Range of motion you cannot control is not useful. Being able to get into a deep position passively while having no strength there is associated with more problems, not fewer. This is why the band matters — end-range strength is the point, not end-range reach.

If something hurts

Mobility work should feel like effort or mild discomfort, never sharp pain, and never pins and needles or numbness. If it does, stop and get it assessed.

The same goes for anything that has been there more than a few weeks, anything that is getting worse rather than better, or any joint that gives way. A chartered physiotherapist will get you further in one session than six months of guessing, and in the UK you can self-refer to physiotherapy through the NHS in most areas without going via a GP.

Common questions

Do I really need yoga blocks? They are the most useful item on the list after the mat. Blocks bring the floor closer so you can hold a position with a spine you control, rather than hanging in a position your hamstrings will not let you reach. For anyone who sits at a desk or lifts weights, they change the quality of the work substantially.

Should I stretch before or after lifting? Use movement before, holds after. Long static stretches immediately before heavy lifting can slightly reduce force output, whereas moving through the ranges you are about to load prepares them well.

How thick should a mat be? Thicker is kinder for kneeling and floor work; thinner is better for standing balance, because a soft surface makes balancing artificially hard. If you want one mat for both, choose something in the middle and accept the compromise.

Does foam rolling actually work? It reliably produces a short-term increase in range of motion, which makes it a good warm-up tool. The stronger claims about breaking down scar tissue are not well supported. Use it to move better before training, not as a treatment for something that hurts.

The small amount of kit a home mobility and yoga practice actually needs, and how to fit it into a shared room.

[1449

post-167621","post","type-post","status-publish","format-standard","hentry","category-buying-guides
<!-- This site is optimized with the Yoast SEO plugin v28.4 -
