The assumptions underneath it — that you can get down to the floor and back up easily, that a 20kg bar is a sensible starting load, that a machine in the middle of a room is fine — do not hold for everyone, and they hold less well with age.

The equipment question is actually the easy part. The room is what determines whether the training happens.

> Before you start. If you have a heart condition, high blood pressure, diabetes, a joint replacement, osteoporosis, or you have had a fall in the last year, talk to your GP or a chartered physiotherapist before starting a new exercise routine. This is general guidance, not medical advice, and an assessment will tell you far more about what suits you than any article can.

What the training actually needs to do

The evidence here is unusually clear, and it points somewhere most people do not expect.

Strength training matters more with age, not less. Muscle mass and — more importantly — muscle power decline from middle age onward, and that decline is what eventually makes stairs hard and standing from a chair difficult. It responds to resistance training at any age, including well into the eighties.

Balance training reduces falls. This is one of the better-evidenced findings in the field. Balance work needs to be regular and mildly challenging, and it needs almost no equipment.

Cardiovascular work matters, but it is the part most people already do some of, through walking.

Practically: if you can only do one thing, do resistance training. If you can do two, add balance work. Everything else is a bonus.

Planning the space

Something solid to hold

The most important feature of an accessible home gym is not equipment — it is a stable point of support at hip-to-chest height, positioned where balance work happens.

A kitchen worktop, a sturdy chair back against a wall, a windowsill, or a wall-mounted rail all work. What does not work is anything that moves: a dining chair on a smooth floor, a towel rail, a piece of furniture on castors.

Plan the balance area around this support, not the other way round.

Floor you can trust

Rugs with curled edges, thresholds between rooms, trailing cables and slippery surfaces are the specific hazards that matter.

If you use a mat, it must be one that stays put — a mat that slides is worse than no mat. Thicker matting is kinder on knees but makes standing balance harder, so if you are doing both, consider a firm surface for standing work and a mat only for floor work.

Seated options at working height

A stable chair without arms, at a height where your feet rest flat on the floor with knees at roughly 90 degrees, opens up a large amount of useful training. Arms get in the way of most upper-body movements; a dining chair against a wall is usually better than an armchair.

Light

Genuinely underrated. Older eyes need considerably more light to judge edges and distances, and poor lighting is a real contributor to trips. A well-lit space is a safety feature.

Warmth

Cold muscles and cold hands make everything harder and grip less reliable. A garage in January is a barrier to training that has nothing to do with motivation.

Equipment that suits

Resistance bands. Light, easy to grip, no risk of dropping something heavy on a foot, and they scale in small increments. The best starting point for most people.

Browse resistance bands

Light dumbbells. More useful than they look. Sit-to-stands holding a pair of 2kg dumbbells is a genuinely effective lower-body exercise, and the load progresses in small steps.

Look at the handle rather than the weight. A grip that is too thick is the limiting factor for a lot of people, and hexagonal ends stop them rolling away.

Browse dumbbells

A stable step. Step-ups are one of the best lower-body exercises available, and a low, wide, non-slip step with a handrail nearby covers a lot of ground.

An exercise bike. Seated, low-impact, no balance demand, and easy to do while watching something. For anyone whose knees or hips make walking uncomfortable, a bike is often the most sustainable cardio option there is.

Browse exercise bikes

What to avoid, and why

Treadmills are a common purchase and a common regret. Getting on and off a moving belt is the risky part, and for someone with balance concerns the risk outweighs the benefit when walking outdoors or a bike is available.

Floor-based programmes where everything happens lying down. Not because floor work is bad, but because if getting up from the floor is difficult, a routine built on it will quietly stop happening. Build the routine around standing and seated work, and treat floor work as a bonus.

Heavy barbells without supervision. Not because older adults cannot train heavy — many can and should — but because getting under a loaded bar alone is the wrong place to start.

A simple weekly structure

Twice a week: resistance training. Sit-to-stands, step-ups, band rows, band or dumbbell presses. Two or three sets of each, stopping a couple of repetitions short of failure.

Most days: balance. Two or three minutes. Standing with feet together, then heel-to-toe, then single leg — always beside your support point.

Most days: walking, or the bike.

That is a genuinely effective programme and it needs a mat, a band, a pair of light dumbbells and a chair.

When to get advice rather than push on

Stop and speak to a GP or physiotherapist if you experience chest pain or pressure, unusual breathlessness, dizziness or light-headedness, or if a joint gives way. Also worth a conversation: any pain that lasts more than a couple of weeks, or any fall, even one that seemed minor.

None of that means stopping exercise. It usually means adjusting it, which is exactly what a physiotherapist is for — and in most parts of the UK you can self-refer to NHS physiotherapy without seeing a GP first.

Common questions

Is it safe to start strength training in your seventies or eighties? For most people, yes, and the evidence that it is worthwhile is strong — muscle responds to resistance training well into later life. The caveat is individual: existing heart conditions, blood pressure, osteoporosis and recent surgery all change what is appropriate, which is why a conversation with a GP or physiotherapist first is worth the delay.

How often should older adults do strength work? Twice a week is the point at which meaningful change happens, and it is the figure most national guidance settles on. More is fine if it is sustainable; less produces maintenance rather than improvement.

What is the best single exercise for staying independent? The sit-to-stand. It trains the exact movement that determines whether you can get out of a chair, a car or a bath unaided, it needs no equipment, and it loads easily by holding a pair of light dumbbells.

Are treadmills a bad idea? Not universally, but they are the piece of equipment where the risk-to-benefit ratio is least favourable for anyone with balance concerns. Getting on and off a moving belt is the hazardous part. An exercise bike or walking outdoors achieves the same thing with far less exposure.

Most home gym advice is written for someone in their thirties with a garage.
