You need a corner — but it has to be the right corner, and the constraint that decides it is almost never floor area.

A rack, a bench and a bar fit comfortably into about 2m × 2m. What that 4 square metres cannot tell you is whether the bar will actually fit, whether you can press overhead, and whether the floor will take the load. Those three checks come first.

Check these before you buy anything

The bar is longer than the rack

A standard Olympic barbell is 2.2m long. A power rack is typically 1.2m wide. That means roughly half a metre of bar sticks out either side, and you need clear space there — not a wall, not a radiator, not a door that opens inwards.

This is the single most common home-gym planning error. People measure the rack, find it fits, and discover on delivery day that they cannot load a plate onto the left-hand sleeve without standing in the doorway.

What to measure: at least 2.6m of clear width where the rack goes, allowing 20cm either side of the bar for your hands and the plates.

Overhead clearance

To press a bar overhead you need your standing height, plus roughly 60cm for the lockout, plus the height of the platform or mat you are standing on. For most adults that means 2.3m minimum, and taller lifters need more.

Pull-ups need more still. You need to hang from the bar with your feet clear of the floor, and the rack’s pull-up bar sits near the top of the uprights. In a room with a 2.3m ceiling, a full-height rack may not even stand up.

The fix if the ceiling is low: a half rack or squat stands rather than a full power rack, and press seated or use dumbbells instead of a standing barbell press.

Floor loading

A modest home setup — rack, bench, bar and 100kg of plates — is around 200kg of static load in one small area, before you add a person and the dynamic load of a dropped weight.

On a ground floor with a concrete slab, this is a non-issue. On a suspended timber floor upstairs, it needs thought. Load spread across a wider area is far safer than load concentrated under four rack feet, and dropping a loaded bar on a first floor is a genuinely bad idea regardless of matting.

The honest answer: if you want to lift heavy, lift on the ground floor or in the garage.

What goes in the corner

The rack

The anchor of the setup and the thing that makes barbell training safe to do alone. What you are paying for is steel gauge, upright dimensions and hole spacing — but the decision that matters for a small space is full rack versus half rack versus squat stands.

A full power rack is the safest option, because the safety pins catch a failed lift completely. It is also the largest and needs the most ceiling.

A half rack or squat stands take less depth and less height, at the cost of a smaller margin for error. If you train alone and push close to failure, that margin is worth paying for in space.

Across our range, racks span a wide band — from simple stands under £100 to full commercial cages well over £3,000, with most home-suitable options clustering around the £500 mark. Checked August 2026.

Browse racks

The bench

An adjustable bench earns its space in a way a flat bench does not: flat, incline and upright from one piece of kit means pressing, rows and shoulder work all come from the same footprint.

Look at the pad width and the gap between the back pad and seat pad — a large gap is uncomfortable on incline work. Most home-appropriate adjustable benches sit around the £500 mark in our range, with entry options well below that.

Browse weight benches

The bar

One good bar outlasts everything else in the corner. For general training, a standard 20kg Olympic bar with moderate knurl and a decent load rating covers squats, presses, rows and deadlifts without compromise.

Buy the bar before you buy more plates. A cheap bar with a rough finish and sticky sleeves makes every session slightly worse, and unlike plates, you cannot fix it by adding more.

Browse barbells

The plates

The one thing that genuinely scales over time. Start with enough to be challenged on your weakest lift rather than your strongest — most people over-buy at the top end and end up with 25kg plates gathering dust while they train presses with the bar and a pair of 5s.

Plates also need somewhere to live. Loose plates on the floor are the main cause of trip injuries in home gyms, and they mark flooring badly.

Browse weight plates · Browse storage

The layout

With 2m × 2m to work with:

Rack against the wall, but not tight to it — leave enough behind for the bar to clear on a rack pull or a rear-foot-elevated split squat.

Bench stored upright against the side wall when not in use, wheeled or carried into the rack when needed. An adjustable bench left permanently inside the rack eats the space you need to squat.

Plates on a vertical tree or wall-mounted pegs, not stacked on the floor. Vertical storage is the difference between a corner that works and a corner you have to tidy before every session.

Clear lane in front of the rack for anything done outside it — deadlifts, rows, carries.

The order to buy in

If the budget arrives in stages rather than all at once, this order gives you a usable gym at every step:

Bar and plates. You can train productively with nothing else — deadlifts, rows, presses, cleans.

Bench. Unlocks pressing volume, which is where most of the missing upper-body work lives.

Rack. Unlocks squatting safely alone, and turns the setup into a complete gym.

Storage. Not optional long-term, but it is the thing to defer if something has to wait.

The temptation is to buy the rack first because it looks like the gym. It is actually the piece you can do without for longest.

One safety point worth repeating

If you train alone with a barbell, safety pins or spotter arms set at the right height are not an accessory. Set them so that with the bar resting on them, you can crawl out from underneath. Test that with an empty bar before you ever load it.

A working strength setup in a 2m x 2m footprint – what goes where, what clearance you need and the order to buy in.

[1449

post-167612","post","type-post","status-publish","format-standard","hentry","category-buying-guides
<!-- This site is optimized with the Yoast SEO plugin v28.4 -
